Position Summary

The Controller is responsible for coordinating, administering and controlling financial operations of the Company. Provides tax, insurance and other reports required by governmental regulations. Reviews, analyzes and interprets financial and budgetary reports. Directs all aspects of accounting operations and the preparation of annual financial forecasts. Oversees the development of financial accounting systems required to maintain reporting requirements.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervises Receptionist
  • Assists in the monthly closing process to include preparation/collation of monthly account reconciliations.
  • Analyzes new leases and records as necessary.
  • Records new debt and manages equipment line of credit.
  • Analyzes and records capital asset acquisitions and depreciation.
  • Reviews working capital on a regular basis and monitors the company’s cash flow and credit line; communicates results with executive management.
  • Assists in the Company’s annual year-end review with the independent auditors
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by maintaining continuing professional education via licensing requirements.
  • Works with HR to determine and implement benefit selection.
  • Leads the annual audits of the 401k plan and the annual SOC audit.
  • Files NYS and VA sales tax.
  • Analyzes customer accounts for review by client as needed.
  • Monitors client postage balances.
  • Analyzes and schedules Pitney Bowes postage payments in consultation with executive management.
  • Analyzes postage usage of revolving postage accounts to determine if sufficient funds are kept on hand.
  • Manages accounts receivable and collection efforts and resolves cash posting discrepancies.
  • Performs as backup for daily bank reconciliation and check cutting when needed.
  • Assists Controller in insuring invoices are captured in the correct month.
  • Codes Fed-Ex and other invoices as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

 

  • Minimum of 10 years accounting experience with at least 3-5 years in a managerial role; business experience preferred.
  • BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting; or a BA in Accounting is required.  CPA and/or MBA is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge in Account Reconciliation, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll Processes, etc.
  • Must have strong leadership and communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Technical and comprehensive knowledge of all finance, financial planning, accounting and tax areas of a business including an excellent understanding of GAAP
  • Experience with selecting and implementing account systems.  Strong knowledge of Mas 90 and Crystal reports is highly preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills including all MS Office applications. (Word, Advanced Excel to include pivot tables, advanced nested formulas, Outlook, PowerPoint; Proficient in other Microsoft Office Products.
  • Must be analytical and able to manipulate computer programs to export data and information.  
  • Must be efficient with strong attention to detail.
  • Must have strong customer support orientation (for internal/external customers), demonstrated professional demeanor, and the ability to maintain confidential information
  • Must have strong skills in organization and planning, demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment and problem solving

 

 

 

Supervision

 

The Assistant Controller directly supervises the Receptionist.  The Assistant Controller works with Human Resources to recruit, interview, and make hiring recommendation.  Instructs and trains employees in work methods; assigns, plans and schedules work; checks and approves work; conducts performance evaluations, enforces employment policies and procedures, and implements disciplinary actions.
