JOB SUMMARY

Clear Path for Veterans, Inc. (CPV or Clear Path), is Upstate New York’s Veteran Resource Center serving as a hub of information, programs, and services for veterans and their families. The Chef is responsible for managing a variety of culinary-based services and activities that focus on helping veterans, military members, and their families.  This could include but is not limited to, cooking nutritious meals for Veterans and their families at weekly Canteens, providing catering support for on and off-site events, operating the CPV seasonal food trailer, education, training, and outreach.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

  1. Plan, organize and supervise daily culinary operations.
  2. Develop recipes and prepare food items in accordance with consumer tastes, nutritional needs, ease of preparation, and established procedures and budgetary constraints; participate in recipe testing and menu development.
  3. Dedication to excellent food quality through maintaining proper safety and sanitation standards.
  4. Direct and coordinate the work of culinary volunteers.
  5. Ensure great room and any other areas involving culinary services are always in a presentable condition before, during, and after events and normal operations.
  6. Handle food ordering, receiving, and inventory control.
  7. Assist with developing and maintaining positive relationships with local farmers and local food purveyors.
  8. Organize inventory, including in the walk-in cooler and freezer.
  9. Ensure the highest quality of food and experience for Veterans and guests.
  10. Operation of the CPV food trailer at various off-site catering events, festivals, and other fundraising efforts.
  11. Work in coordination with the CVP Facilities Manager to ensure the CPV food trailer is well maintained.
  12. Responsible for obtaining and maintaining current and appropriate permits associated with the CPV food trailer’s operation.
  13. Responsible for representing CPV at the CNY Food Truck Alliance meetings and coordinating events with the alliance as necessary.
  14. Develop, mentor, and manage Clear Path for Veteran’s expansion site(s) culinary programming and services, as requested by executive leadership.
  15. Complete other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Associate degree in Culinary Arts or related field and two (2) years of culinary work experience (fine and casual dining, high volume, boutique, corporate, etc.) some culinary management work experience preferred.
  • Experience with inventory control, ordering, P&L’s, food cost.
  • SERV Safe certification required.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES NEEDED TO PERFORM EFFECTIVELY IN THE POSITION

  • Strong knowledge of NYS Department of Health, OSHA, and other county and state guidelines, codes, and regulations relating to commercial kitchen operations.
  • Demonstrated institutional, hotel, or restaurant culinary skills to include large quantity production.
  • Ability to teach proper food preparation, presentation, cooking methods, and sanitation to volunteers.
  • Ability to work with local farms and other distributors in sourcing the highest quality ingredients.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively manage volunteers and kitchen staff.
  • Flexibility to work well within changing priorities and situations.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people.
  • Strong time management, organizational, and prioritization skills; attention to detail.
  • Writing skills sufficient to draft letters, memos, and other professional correspondence.
  • Computer literate with good MS skills to include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and willingness to learn other software applications, as necessary.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid New York State driver’s license and must have use of a reliable vehicle.
  • Will occasionally be required to use own vehicle to pick up supplies and small culinary equipment.
  • Required to travel daily as needed within New York State in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and some holidays as necessary to accommodate for special event attendance.
  • Must be comfortable with dogs in the workplace.

JOB-RELATED PHYSICAL ABILITIES NEEDED IN ORDER TO PERFORM THE JOB IN A SATISFACTORY MANNER

Must possess speech and hearing sufficient for telephone and in-person communications.  Manual dexterity is sufficient for regular use of computer keyboards and other office equipment.  Vision sufficient for frequent use of a computer monitor to write and read documents. This position requires constant physical activity, including reaching, bending, and standing for extended periods of time, and the stamina to work extended days, up to 12+ hours occasionally.   Ability to lift up to 50 pounds overhead. Ability to work in extreme hot and cold working environments.
